Materials Characterization

Independent technical guides to XRD, SEM/EDS, UV–Vis DRS, XPS and thermal analysis.

Materials Characterization

Materials characterization connects processing history and composition to crystal structure, microstructure, surface chemistry, optical response and thermal behaviour. Each technique has its own measurement physics, instrument architecture, practical workflow and interpretation limits.

How to use this division: Start with the question you need to answer. No single characterization method establishes phase purity, composition, microstructure and functional performance simultaneously. Select complementary techniques and preserve the raw data and acquisition conditions.

Choosing complementary methods

Research question Useful primary method Important limitation
Which crystalline phases are present? XRD Amorphous content and minor phases may be difficult to quantify
What does the surface morphology look like? SEM Image contrast depends on detector and acquisition conditions
Which elements are present locally? EDS Interaction volume and peak overlaps limit spatial and chemical specificity
What is the optical absorption response? UV–Vis DRS Scattering and sample packing affect the transformed spectrum
Which chemical states occur near the surface? XPS Surface-sensitive; charging and fitting assumptions matter
At what temperature does mass or heat flow change? TGA / DSC / DTA Events depend on atmosphere, heating rate and sample configuration
